Family Career Challenge

For the 2021-2022 school year, the High School is focused on literacy: reading, writing, and speaking. We all know that reading and writing does not end upon graduation, and we are dedicated to ensuring our students are competent in literacy by the time they leave our halls.

This is why our High School students are encouraged to participate in our Family Career Challenge, where students will interview a family member or close family friend about how literacy plays a role in their career.

“When our children reach high school, we as parents or guardians feel like we are not needed as much in their education. This couldn’t be further from the truth,” says Ms. Beth Price, High School Family Engagement Specialist. “You are still considered the number one influencer on your child at this age – so, with that in mind, we wanted to come up with a way to get the dialogue started. The Family Career Challenge is a fun way, we hope, to do this.”

Students are asked to record their interview and post it on FlipGrid, where our students’ interviews will be private to the public, but open to the school and families. The join code for this account is 5742627f.

“Many times as a high school teacher, I am asked, ‘When am I ever going to use this again?’ By hearing how important reading and writing are to their family members, hopefully they will understand the importance of a good literacy foundation,” adds Ms. Price.

Each interview submitted on FlipGrid will be entered into a drawing for gift cards and spirit wear. We intend to incorporate and encourage more engagement with our students’ families throughout the rest of the school year.
